COVID Response Texting Program Grants – 2021

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise this winter, our country is in a time of significant risk. Health care providers are struggling, and communities are dealing with the economic and psychological impacts of essential public health measures including lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.

During this time, Movement Labs (formerly Resistance Labs), has opened a request for proposals for COVID Response Texting Grants to progressive organizations seeking to mitigate the impact of COVID via innovative large-scale texting programs. We will be selecting organizations doing this work to receive $10,000 worth of software access and consulting services. Our goal is to leverage our capacity to reduce the harm that this crisis will have on marginalized communities, organize, and help build power over the long-term.

We Invite Organizations with Those Goals to Ask Themselves:

How Could Mass Texting Help Our Organization and Mission?

Example projects might include: sharing mask mandate or vaccine effectiveness and safety information, signing essential workers and seniors up for and confirming vaccine appointments, expanding the outreach for a domestic abuse hotline, providing information about food pantry availability to low-income citizens, or creating an anti-eviction SMS response.

Selected Organizations Will Receive

  • Consulting services to manage a text campaign
  • Data provisioning to legally secure a list of up to 100,000 relevant cell phone numbers (if needed)
  • Management of dedicated volunteers to engage in conversations via text
  • Design and execution of experiments to rigorously assess impact and scale funding
  • Assistance creating short code opt-in, website language, or other relevant collateral

Project Criteria

Projects selected will meet one or more of the following:

  • Provide timely COVID-related public health, social service, or safety net information or resources
  • Mobilize individuals to advocate for COVID-related policy or government action

Organizational Criteria

Organizations selected will meet one or more of the following:

  • Have work that aims to protect or support underserved, high-risk, or vulnerable populations
  • Have a racial, social, or economic justice lens and build power among marginalized or low-income groups

And Also All of the Below

  • Have not yet developed significant data and SMS/texting capacity internally
  • Be able to make strategic, script, and universe decisions based on our recommendations and turn them around within one week
  • Be functioning as a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) non-profit
